Pausing new GitHub Copilot Pro trials

April 13, 2026 update: All GitHub Copilot Pro trials, including existing trials, have been paused while our investigation continues. In the meantime, if you were on a Copilot trial, you can change your plan to Copilot Free or upgrade to either a Copilot Pro or Pro+ subscription.

As GitHub Copilot continues to grow, we’ve seen a significant rise in abuse of our free trial system. To protect the experience and integrity of the platform for legitimate developers, we are pausing new GitHub Copilot Pro trials while we investigate and strengthen our protection mechanisms.

What this means

  • New users cannot start a free Copilot Pro trial at this time.
  • Copilot Free and paid Copilot Pro subscriptions remain fully available.

What’s next

This is a temporary pause. We are actively working on improved safeguards to prevent misuse of the trial system, and we will reopen trials once those protections are in place. We’ll share an update as soon as new trials are available again.

Developers who want access to Copilot now can subscribe to Copilot Free or any of our paid Copilot subscriptions directly.
